Fitting a headboard is usually quick and straightforward. Below you’ll find simple instructions covering the most common situations.
As long as you have the correct size headboard for your bed (for example, a single headboard for a single divan), fitting should be hassle-free.
New Bed with a New Headboard
Most divan beds are supplied with the fixing bolts already included.
Look for small circular white stickers with a black dot at the head end of the divan base
These mark where the fixing holes are located beneath the fabric
Carefully pierce the fabric at these points to expose the holes
Most beds have two fixing points (one on each side), though larger beds may have more:
Some beds have four fixing points
6ft super king beds can have up to eight
Fitting Steps
Screw the headboard fixing bolts approximately 20mm into the exposed holes
Position the headboard struts over the bolts
Slide the headboard down so it sits just above the mattress
Tighten the bolts using a coin or screwdriver
Stand at the foot of the bed and check the headboard is level
If needed, loosen one side slightly and adjust
Floor Standing Headboards
For floor-standing headboards:
Position the headboard correctly before inserting the fixing bolts
These headboards rest on the floor and do not have height adjustment
💡 Helpful tip: Lifting the headboard slightly (around 10mm) off the carpet or floor can make moving the bed much easier.
New Headboard on an Old Bed (With an Existing Headboard)
If your bed already has a headboard fitted:
The fixing bolts will already be in place
Loosen the bolts slightly — there’s no need to remove them completely
Slide the old headboard upwards and off
Assemble your new headboard following the supplied instructions, then:
Slide it onto the bolts
Adjust the height
Tighten the bolts as described above
New Headboard on an Old Bed (No Previous Headboard)
If your bed has never had a headboard fitted:
The original fixing hole stickers may be missing or worn away
Use your fingers to gently locate the fixing holes beneath the fabric
Once located:
Purchase suitable headboard fixing bolts
Fit the headboard following the same steps outlined above
Final Check
As long as the headboard matches the bed size and is fitted securely, installation should be straightforward.
